What kind of story or fiction is conveyed today by a photographic image?
Entitled BodyFiction(s), the seventh edition of the European Month of Photography festival in Luxembourg featured works by some twenty emerging artists-photographers interested in new representations of the body and the human figure.
The artistic positionings of this new generation of photographers – most of them women – diverges from classical models by a approach and an often worried and even disturbing questioning of traditional models.
Fragmentation and dislocation of the body are the characteristics of this type of photography in a context of aesthetic changes marked by an interrogation on gender specifications and generally by a questioning of the roles and characteristics of the sexes.
These images do also reflect the bio-technological changes in our society where the transformation or hybridization of the body is now part of the daily lives of men and women be it only through the tattoo or the sometimes very advanced plastic surgery. Digital photography also allows all forms of self-representation through the “photoshopped” modification of physical reality where the selfie is only one of the many avatars of the body that a “society of entertainment “ authorizes through social networks and the media in general.
Photography becomes one of the vectors of self-seeking and the way of being or appearing in a world where it is possible to develop all sorts of fictions inspired by classical models on one side and to develop others in the virtual worlds.
